Our Commitment to the Environment

Our Commitment

Our environment is precious. We work towards sustaining it by operating all aspects of our business in a way that reduces our carbon footprint, as well as that of our clients. We aggressively pursue pollution prevention, energy conservation and waste reduction in all of our operations. We only seek out contractors who conduct their operations in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. Under no circumstances do we trade in e-waste in non-OECD countries, or any international country.

Global Warming – Co2 Reduction

The Planet is undoubtedly warming. This warming is largely the result of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from human activities, fossil fuel combustion and changes in land use e.g. deforestation. This warming will have real consequences for the Planet. To protect our Planet we must fundamentally reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We therefore aim in all of our operations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We also encourage our contractors to do the same.

    1. Recognising our legal, moral, ethical and spiritual obligations in all decisions and operations where there is an environmental impact.
    2. Carrying out all of our operations in a manner that reduces our environmental footprint, and that of our clients.
    1. Aggressively pursuing pollution prevention, energy conservation and waste reduction in our operations.
    2. Encouraging all of our partners and contractors to share in our Policy.
    3.

      E-WASTE DUTY OF CARE

       What is Waste?

The Law states that electrical and electronic equipment becomes waste when its owner discards it. The Environment Agency considers that electrical and electronic equipment ceases to become waste if it is fully functioning and fit for direct reuse for the purpose for which it was originally made.

When computers and the like are donated to NSA PCCARE, the equipment will be regarded as waste, and treated legally as waste.

      E-Waste Duty of Care

Where electrical and electronic equipment is waste, both our clients and we have a duty to ensure that the waste is handled safely and in accordance with the law. This ‘Duty of Care’ means that our clients and we shall take all reasonable measures to ensure that waste is only handled or dealt with by individuals or businesses that are ‘authorised’ to deal with it.

‘Authorised’ means a waste collection authority, a person who has a waste management licence or waste carriers licence, or a person exempt from registering as a carrier of waste. NSA PCCARE is authorised to carry waste. The treatment of NSA PCCARE’s waste when it has not been possible to re-use equipment, is carried out by our partner TRIPLE-eee Recycling, TES-AMM - Licence No..

In addition to the requirements above, a record must be kept of all waste transferred through a system of Waste Transfer Notices (W.T.N). NSA PCCARE will advise the client direct on this requirement.

      WEEE Regulations

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations apply only to producers of electrical and electronic equipment not users. The WEEE Regulations do not affect your duty of care obligations.

      Further Advice

Waste legislation is complicated. Feel free to contact us to discuss the above in more detail. Alternatively, excellent guidance can be sought from the Environment Agency on 08708 506 506.

      TOXIC TRADE IN E-WASTE

  • Under the guise of utilising the ‘competitive advantage’ of cheap labour markets in poorer developing areas of the world, a disproportionate burden of toxic waste, dangerous products and polluting technologies (e.g. WEEE) are currently being exported to developing countries much in contravention to UK law. These developing countries are being asked to perpetuate some of the world's most toxic industries and products and become the global dumping ground for much of the world's toxic wastes. We believe that it is vital to halt this ‘toxic trade. It not only destroys the environment and health of those in developing countries, but also serves as a disincentive to sustainable global solutions that involve ‘greening’ our manufacturing processes and products upstream through ‘green design’ and through ‘toxic use reductions’.

Further advice on Toxic Trade can be found on www.ban.org (please also refer to the photo gallery).

UK International Trade Legislation - The UK in most circumstances bans shipments of e-waste but especially waste shipment to non-OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries e.g. third world developing countries. Where trade is allowed, shipments are strictly controlled by - The Waste Shipment Regulations (Council Regulation (EEC) No. 259/93), the Transfrontier Shipment of Waste Regulations 1994, and the UK Management Plan for Exports and Imports of Waste (the UK Plan).

Is your waste being shipped to non-OECD countries?

    INTERNATIONAL TRADE POLICY

    1. Under no circumstances do we trade in e-waste in non-OECD countries, or any international country.

Under no circumstance do we knowingly trade working equipment with any supplier who trades internationally. We oppose any activities on the part of any individual or organisation that exports hazardous wastes from OECD to non-OECD countries, where illegal or not within the true spirit of the law.
