Recycling project is helping close the digital divide - Jul 30 2009 by Rachel Moses, Port Talbot Guardian.

A NEW innovative community recycling project has been launched in Port Talbot.

The aim of the programme is to build confidence and work skills while greatly reducing ICT waste within Neath Port Talbot area.

Layton Emery, PCCARE's project leader explained: "We are excited about this new reuse and recycle initiative."

"It will allow us to offer real work-based placements, training and volunteering opportunities as well as providing working computers, for a small fee, to those who cannot afford to buy one. It's a means to reuse waste instead of just recycling it. We will be helping to close the digital divide, improve job prospects by building work skills and increasing confidence while, equally as important, reducing waste."

  • * The UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations came into force on 2nd January 2007. The WEEE Directive introduces the principal of Producer Responsibility. The Regulations aim to reduce the amount of electrical and electronic equipment being placed into landfill. They require the collection, treatment, recycling and environmentally sound disposal of WEEE. The regulations set out obligations for producers, importers, distributors and retailers of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) together with end users.

  • ** The Data Protection Act 1998 requires that all information collected by an organization is destroyed when the media on which it is stored becomes redundant.
